TSAR BOMBA Water Resistance & Durability

Water resistance ratings can be misleading. We explain what TSAR BOMBA's ratings actually mean for daily wear, and assess overall build durability.

Understanding Water Resistance Ratings

Water resistance in watches is measured in meters or atmospheres (ATM), but these numbers do not mean what most people assume. A watch rated at "30 meters" does not mean you can safely submerge it to 30 meters. Instead, these ratings refer to the static pressure the watch can withstand under laboratory conditions.

Here is what the common ratings mean in practical terms:

RatingSuitable ForNot Suitable For
30m / 3 ATMSplashes, rain, hand washingSwimming, showering
50m / 5 ATMSwimming, shallow waterDiving, water sports
100m / 10 ATMSnorkeling, recreational swimmingScuba diving

TSAR BOMBA Water Resistance Specs

Most TSAR BOMBA models are rated between 30 meters (3 ATM) and 50 meters (5 ATM). This means the watches are generally suitable for everyday wear including hand washing, rain exposure, and accidental splashes. The 50-meter models can handle swimming in a pool or the ocean under calm conditions.

However, no TSAR BOMBA model we are aware of is rated for scuba diving or high-pressure water activities. If you need a dedicated dive watch, you should look at watches rated 200 meters or above. Case and Crystal Durability

The 316L stainless steel cases used across the TSAR BOMBA range are inherently durable. This steel grade is resistant to corrosion, which is particularly important for watches that may be exposed to sweat, saltwater, or household chemicals. The steel will resist most everyday scratches and impacts, though deep scratches or significant drops can still cause damage.

The sapphire crystal glass is the standout durability feature. Sapphire rates 9 on the Mohs hardness scale (diamond is 10), making it extremely resistant to scratches from everyday materials like keys, coins, or desk surfaces. This is a genuine advantage over mineral glass, which can scratch more easily.

For a detailed look at these materials and what they mean for your purchase, see our materials guide.

Carbon Fiber Models

The carbon fiber sport models offer an additional durability advantage: reduced weight. Carbon fiber is lighter than steel, which means less momentum during impacts and more comfort during extended wear. The trade-off is that carbon fiber can be more difficult to repair if damaged, but for everyday use, it is an extremely robust material.

Practical Care Tips

Regardless of the water resistance rating, following these practices will help maintain your watch's condition over time:

  • Rinse after saltwater exposure. Salt can corrode gaskets and accelerate wear. A quick rinse under fresh water after beach visits is sufficient.
  • Avoid temperature extremes. Do not wear the watch in saunas, hot tubs, or extremely cold environments, as thermal shock can compromise water resistance seals.
  • Do not press buttons underwater. Even on water-resistant models, pressing crown or pushers underwater can allow water ingress.
  • Store properly. When not wearing the watch, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A watch box or soft pouch will protect against scratches.
  • Service periodically. Water resistance gaskets degrade over time. If you regularly expose your watch to water, consider having the gaskets checked and replaced every few years.

Our Durability Assessment

TSAR BOMBA watches appear to be built for everyday durability. The combination of 316L steel, sapphire crystal, and reinforced crowns suggests a watch that can withstand the rigors of daily life without excessive caution. The water resistance ratings are adequate for most non-diving activities.

For buyers who intend to wear their watch daily, including during exercise, commuting, and light outdoor activities, the durability profile is appropriate. For dedicated water sports or professional diving, we recommend looking at purpose-built dive watches from specialized brands.
